A day in the life
There’s no typical day in the life for a user researcher at in aws supply chain, but if there were it might look something like this:
In the morning, your design partner asks for your thoughts on some design options that they’ve created in response to insights you delivered from user testingUsers indicated that the solution as a whole met their needs, but that it was confusing to navigate and would slow them downThe designer wants your advice about some options and what you think the impact of them will beYou brainstorm with the designer and decide that their second approach is the best, with some minor adjustmentsYou make a note to modify your recent research report with the chosen approach so that you have a complete record of going from problem through to solution.
Early afternoon you meet with the other designers and researchers in the aws supply chain teamNext week the team is providing an update to senior leadership about our progressWe have some interesting data from usage and attitudinal metrics and you’ve been tapped to help a sr researcher craft and then present the story we’ll be tellingYou are asked to provide a first draft by the end of the week.
For the rest of the afternoon, you have 2 usability tests lined upThis is a relatively complex test that involves a lot of technical set up (especially as it’s being done remotely and requires that the user screen share)In addition, a few of the engineers have asked to observe, which is an exciting opportunity to improve the team’s understanding of the usersYou take half an hour to make sure that all the tech looks ok from your home office (and that your cat is asleep so they won’t take a starring role on the video)The tests go well, and you keep an eye on slack as you’re moderatingThe conversation between team members shows that they are already brain storming solutions to unexpected problems.
