Summary
Support in hydraulic modeling to survey data, water level records, water flow and velocity records and collect data in freshwater and tidally influenced water bodies.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Includes the following:
Conducts 1-dimensional (1-d) and 2-dimensional (2-d) hydraulic modelling of surface water features such as wetlands, rivers, and streams on national wildlife refuges using hydrologic engineering center`s (ceiwr-hec)river analysis system (hec-ras) modelling softwareResults of hydraulic modelling are used to support development of conceptual wetland and stream restoration design plans.
Assesses existing data to support the development of hydraulic models including;topographic and hydrographic survey data, water level records, water flow and velocity recordsIncludes data collected in freshwater and tidally influenced water bodies.
Assists in the field collection of new topographic and hydrographic data to support development of hydraulic models.
Assists in the deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of water monitoring equipment to support the development of hydraulic models.
Independently builds topographic surfaces (aka terrains) from available topographic and hydrographic survey data, lidar data, and other data sources using mapping and computation programs such as arcgis, arcpro, surfer, or civil 3d.
Independently builds 1-d and 2-d hydraulic models of wetland and stream ecosystems in hec-ras using available topographic and hydrographic survey data and hydrologic dataIncludes, but is not limited to; building terrains, defining model domains, delineating river reaches, defining river cross sections, and defining model domain boundary conditions.
Independently builds, calibrates, and validates hec-ras models to ensure modelled conditions accurately reflect existing hydraulic conditions in project areas.
Works collaboratively with usfws staff hydrologists and biologists to define model scenarios.
Independently runs different model scenarios on calibrated and validated hec-ras models to explore different restoration design options and identify preferred conceptual restoration designs.
Assists with the development of boundary conditions that reflect hydrologic conditions due to changing climate patterns such as; sea level rise or increasing intense precipitation eventsAssists with identifying boundary conditions that reflect hydrologic conditions due to annual exceedance probability (aep) storm events or particularly severe storm events in the historical record (i.eHurricane sandy).
Writes reports summarizing the results of model development, calibration, and model scenario runs.
Presents results of modelling to professional groups within usfws and outside the agency.
Works on an interdisciplinary team of usfws scientists developing restoration strategies for nwrs.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
Skilled in technical writing.
Knowledge of the theories, principles and concepts related to the field of hydrology and hydraulic design.
Knowledge of the basic body of knowledge that involves the study of water in the hydrologic cycle including open channel flow, river hydraulics, hydraulic modelling, and watershed hydrologyThe incumbent must have the ability to apply that body of knowledge creatively to develop hydraulic models and to support ecological restoration on national wildlife refuges.
Working knowledge of hydraulic models that simulate the movement of surface water in natural river systems in one and two dimensions.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques, and practices of water measurement.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques, and practices of topographic and hydrographic surveying.
Knowledge of ecological restoration techniques applied in river, stream, and wetland systemsFamiliarity applying the use of hydraulic models to develop conceptual ecological restoration designs.
Substantial skills in interpersonal communication with professionals at various levels in numerous fields in federal and state governments and the private sector to facilitate the sharing of information and data sets.
Demonstrated ability to meet and deal effectively with people both orally and in written communications.
Skilled in the analysis of water related data using computer programs such as hec_hms, hec-dss, matlab, r, excel, or gis programs.
Ability to provide proof of us citizenship.
