Independent/freelance contractor position
You will need to be in the tallahassee area to meet a couple of times per week, but most of this work may be done remotely from your home.
New start-up magazine looking for a staff writer/editorial assistant for immediate hireThe magazine is a national lifestyle publication focused on a specific home style industry.
Reporting to the managing editor, the position will be an assistant, as well as staff writerWe’ve outlined the job description, but we are looking for someone who is ready and willing to do alittle bit of it all and wants to serve wherever needed; willing to do whatever it takes to support the team.
Ideal candidates will have a portfolio of recent magazine or feature writing experience and will have a proven record of producing entertaining and thoughtful stories for an audience of readersApplicants should supply a portfolio that shows a breadth of knowledge and an innate curiosity for the world around them.
This position requires a self-driven, efficient individual with a positive and solution-oriented attitudeResponsible for a variety of projects, but primarily research, interview and pitch feature and department story ideas, proofing/copy editingWill be involved with public relations and social media copywriting/postingParticipate in team meetings and collaborate to ensure each piece of content is cohesive, high-touch, and well-packagedPartner with other internal teams (including editorial, marketing, and project management) to move complex, custom-content projects forwardWill assist in coordinating print production from planning to completion.
Must have a vision for fresh editorial content, able to discern and prevent getting stuck in routine; while still maintaining the signature style of the magazineMust be hard-working, focused, mature, a self-starter, and eager to improveFocused on technical proficiency and accuracy, as well as excellent proofreading skillsSuperior verbal and written communication, project/time management, and professional demeanorExceptional organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize daily operations and long-term projects in order to meet deadlines, ensure efficient workflow, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Be ready to learn new things and work on whatever is thrown at youRoll up your sleeves through every step of the content-production process, from line editing to working through client product priorities to pulling stock imageryVideo editing, podcasts, social media posting/advertising are more areas that we would love to utilize your previous experience, but we are willing to train the right person to be proficient in these skills.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, english, magazine editing, integrated media communications, creative writing or related fields of study.
2 years of professional writing experience
Ap writing style
Advanced computer skills and knowledge of office productivity tools, including google workspace (docs, sheets, etc.) and microsoft office.
Social media platform knowledge and posting experience.
Customer service experience
Home office space and excellent internet connection suitable for remote work environment.
