Job description
Within sri international, the center for geospace studies is seeking a research engineer to participate in multiple research programs related to ionospheric radio propagation, plasma instabilities, ionospheric scintillations and their disruptions to communication and navigation systems, waves and disturbances in the ionosphere and upper atmosphere, and moreThis position can be based in menlo park, ca or may be remote in the u.s.
The center for geospace studies is part of the space & survivability lab within the advanced technology and systems divisionThe lab is home to several collaborative groups that perform research and development in a variety of areas, such as advanced optical sensing systems, bioelectronic interfaces, optical materials development, energetic materials development, and atmospheric scienceThe center for geospace studies in particular is responsible for the development and operation of the advanced modular incoherent scatter radar (amisr) systems used for basic ionospheric research and is involved in a wide variety of basic and applied research programs related to the geospace environment.
The research engineer will be expected to:
Develop software and algorithms for the analysis of ionospheric data, especially data from global navigation satellite systems (gnss) receivers and incoherent scatter radars.
Interpret data from a variety of ground and space-based sources in the context of plasma physics and the regional and global dynamics of the coupled atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere system.
Contribute to scientific publications related to ionospheric science and radio propagation.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary staff and contribute to group projects within lab.
Develop new ideas for future scientific proposals.
Qualifications
PhDOr equivalent in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, atmospheric science, or a related discipline with 0-2 years of post-graduate experience.
Higher levels of relevant experience with demonstrated independent work or task leadership skills will also be considered.
Demonstrated experience with data analysis and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience with scientific presentations and publications.
Programming experience, preferably in python.
Additionally, some experience with compiled languages (such as c or fortran) is a plus.
Familiarity with low-level data from gnss receivers, incoherent scatter radar data, plasma instability physics, or radio-wave propagation physics is a plus.
Limited travel required.
