Role summary/purpose:
The pace and complexity of software development is increasing constantly – straining traditional it operations practicesDevops helps alleviate siloed workflows, and lack of visibility and collaborationHowever, devops teams do not necessarily dedicate resources to increase application reliability and performanceThat gap is filled by reliability engineering, which applies software engineering principles to ensure high reliability and scalability of software systems.
A reliability engineer oversees highly automatic and self-healing applications, which in turn frees up time for development tasks such as new features, scaling or automationThe ideal reliability engineer is skilled in both software engineering and system administration.
Within eis, we oversee the core cloud environment & enterprise applications/services that provide the foundation for all other apps/services across the organizationAs such, the reliability & stability of these platforms are critical to the smooth operation of technology at synchrony.
This position is remote, where you have the option to work from homeOn occasion we may request for you to commute to our nearest office for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture eventsWe’re proud to offer you choice and flexibility.
Essential responsibilities:
Responsible for the dependability and scalability of enterprise-scale applications.
Develop and lead the reliability process to ensure the highest level of systems availability, stability, security and performance, including maintenance and support, root cause analysis, systems validation, performance tuning and capacity management.
Lead application platform operations teams in shared responsibility for the reliability of these applications and associated platforms.
Have dedicated time for creating software that improves the reliability of systems in production, fixing issues, and responding to incidents/on-call events.
Establish a root cause analysis program that will lead to reduced downtime, increased resiliency and a culture of continuous improvement.
Design and implement monitoring, alerting and appropriate metrics to track and report adherence to service slos and slas, performance and operational efficiency.
Establish platform health reporting guidelines and communication plans.
Drive technical innovation and efficiency in application and infrastructure operations via simplification and automation.
Coordinate between infrastructure, platform and application subject matter experts to promote reliability efforts through communication and best practice sharing.
Work with engineering group to identify application and underlying framework end of life (eol) requirements/opportunities, continuous capacity management, and associated investment plans.
Partner with cto org to coordinate and deliver improvements in critical performance and maintenance related metrics / kpi’s.
Collaborate with application managers and architects in technology strategy, roadmap and error budget.
Research and recommend on evolving technologies.
Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned
Qualifications/requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 7 years of experience with infrastructure / application development or, in lieu of degree, high school diploma/ged 9 years of java application development experience
Minimum of 4 years of using cloud and container technologies
Minimum 3 years of application design and build experience using webservices
Desired characteristics:
Strong working knowledge of fintech industry as it relates to consumer financing
Deep experience building and consuming web services via soap and rest
Deep agile expertise
Critical thinking and creativity
Strong java spring development skills
Experience with dependency management tools like maven or gradle
Experience with continuous integration environments like jenkins
Experience building and deploying application on pivotal cloud foundry
Experience with writing unit, integration, and ui test cases
Working knowledge of the mobile industry including html5, android, mobile web
Eligibility requirements:
You must be 18 years or older
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent
You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process
You must be able to satisfy the requirements of section 19 of the federal deposit insurance act.

The salary range for this position is 100,000.00 - 200,000.00 usd annual
Salaries are adjusted according to market in ca and metro ny and some positions are bonus eligible.
