This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which nist has a severe shortage of candidates.
Responsibilities
This position will:
Perform research to develop and apply x-ray spectroscopies to characterize the oxidation states of elements within samples and the local electronic and atomic structures of materials and thin films
Characterize intermediates and structure function relationships in catalytic systems
Develop analysis procedures using supervised and unsupervised statistical learning algorithms
Advance the analyses and interpretation of complex x-ray spectra
Acquire and analyze and results
Disseminate research results through peer reviewed publications and engagement with scientific communities

Qualifications
Basic requirements:
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
Or
Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience, or additional education.
In addition: to qualify, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the gs-09 level (or zp-ii at nist)Specialized experience is defined as experience in x-ray spectroscopies; laboratory x-ray instrumentation; materials characterization; oxidation state analysis; electronic and atomic structures; catalysis; thin film deposition; statistical learning algorithms; density functional theory; instrumentation design and construction; data analysis; and manuscript preparation.

Master`s or equivalent graduate degree

The physical worksite for this position is located in gaithersburg, marylandHowever, the material measurement laboratory is currently under a maximum telework posture due to the covid-19 pandemic; therefore, this position is currently under a 100 percent telework scheduleThe position`s telework schedule will likely change in the future when material measurement laboratory moves away from its maximum telework postureAt that time, the incumbent will be expected to report to the physical work site in accordance with the updated status requirements of their supervisorThe nature and scope of future telework opportunities will be subject to the unit`s telework policy, any applicable bargaining unit agreements, and supervisory approvalPayment of relocation expenses, as applicable, will be paid in accordance with this job opportunity announcementNon-compliance with the supervisor`s telework-schedule requirement could result in adverse action, including separation.
